A better/cheaper monitor than the Digimate DGM VA from OCUK? |
Yes. I have been doing a lot of research on 24" panels recently and coming to the conclusion that the best for the money has to be the Digimate 24" VA Panel. Some of you may of heard of this, many more of you will probably own one. The main seller of this monitor was OCUK, but there was a massive problem with the stock, they had been infilitrated by TN Panels, accidentally. So some customers buying the guaranteed VA Panel actually received a TN panel. Not good at all and not something I wanted to get myself into.
So I set myself a mission, find a better monitor for the price with no risk. Read more to find out if I succeeded.

500GB LaCie External Hard Disk - £58.96 |
To get this deal you need to qualify for free delivery, you can do this by visiting AVForums Scan Offer page. As far as I am aware this unit is holding a Samsung Spinpoint 500GB T166, for the hard drive alone it will cost you around £56 so that means your getting the enclosure for less than £3. Seems like a bargain to me.
I have ordered one to see what it is like and will put a review up once I have it in my possession. To view the deal you can click the image above or go here. If you want to vote for this deal you can do so over at HotUKDeals on this thread.

Nvidia GeForce 9800GX2 - The Innards |
CustomPC have taken apart Nvidia's newest graphics card, the 9800GX2. This is the flagship of the 9 series, so taking a look at its inner workings is not something most of us have the money (£376 to be exact) or the guts to do.
Custom PC have also finished their review of the 9800 GX2, if you are interested in that you can read the full review here. I have compiled a list of reviews for this card just in case one is not good enough for you. Click "Read More..." at the bottom to see the other reviews I have found and consider useful.

Thermaltake BlacX - Sata Hard Drive Dock |
PcPer recently reviewed this lovely bit of kit. I really like this product not only because it looks cool because it actually would be quite useful.
I had a look around for more information on this product and it seems like Thermaltake have released another version, with a built-in USB Hub and a dust cover. The new version is referred to as the BlacX SE, and the normal one is called the BlacX.
I hope that Thermaltake makes a third edition of the BlacX, keeping the good looks from the original but with the added functionality of the second edition. I cannot bring myself to buy either at the moment because I personally find the trade off too much, the SE looks ugly compared to the original, but the additional features are very useful indeed.

Update: WiiNewz/PSX-Scene |
This is an update on PSX Scene/Wii Newz. Last week they lost their databases and seemingly had no hard back-up. They have decided to separate WiiNewz from PSX-Scene, whereby WiiNewz will use www.wiinewz.com and PSX-Scene can now be found at psx-scene.blogspot.com.
Here is a quote from WiiNewz;
March 16, 2008 We are almost ready to re-open the site. Since all of the posts over the last eight months were lost, we humbly request that you help us to restore WiiNewz to it's former glory by posting new threads containing any relevant information you may have once we have re-opened. We will be having a "Tutorials" contest very soon. Prizes will be supplied by our sponsors and will include a variety of Wii-related goodies. More details will be posted in the coming weeks but, remember, any tutorials posted on the website will eligible for entry.
We have also added a "Downloads" section where users can upload/download files related to the Wii Scene. Of course this cannot be used to distribute any copyrighted material. The section will be moderated and all uploads require WiiNewz staff approval before they appear in the database. For those wondering, we have nothing to report about a Wiikey update.
Big thanks to the guys for their work on getting things back up and running. Good luck on getting the main website back up.

Quad Core Laptops - Hurray! |
Intel could soon be releasing a Quad Core chip designed for laptops. Rumoured to be called the 'Core 2 Extreme QX9300' it uses 12MB L2 cache, a 1066mhz FSB and will be running at a speed of 2.53GHz. The processor will be on a 45nm die with a maximum TDP of 45W.
Now, the gossip is that these processors cost a small fortune, around £500 per chip. That is the price for motherboard manufacturers buying them in batches of a thousand. Whether we will be seeing these laptops soon or not is anyone's guess, but I am sure we can all agree these chips will most likely be inside laptops designed for extreme users (hence the name) and not the average Joe consumer.

Vista SP1 - Update should be ready for tomorrow |
Amazon and other sources are already stating that Vista Service Pack 1 Retail Edition will be ready for sale on Wednesday this week. Other sources are stating that the update for current Vista owners will be available one day earlier, tomorrow (Tuesday). Now I personally won't be updating straight away, I think I will see how it performs for other people first before taking the plunge myself.
There have been a few hiccups though, one was a pre-requisite patch that ending up ruining some peoples perfectly fine workstations. It forced their computer into a cycle of never ending reboots. Microsoft removed this update and said they are working on a fix, and stated further that this update won't effect the SP1 release date.
If you want to read more, you can head over to Computer World which have a longer article on this. I will be making several posts this week about SP1 as I am sure it is something a lot of people will want to know more about. I will also be putting up 'Troubleshooting' post today that will guide you on how you can change the automatic update settings before the release.
